FORT WORTH - The Panthers took down Alabama A&M in a 6-4 win at LaGrange Field on Thursday as starter Stef Hernandez improved to 2-0 career-wise in Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament games and Prairie View A&M survived to play another day.
Hernandez improved to 4-4 after out-dueling Tucker of Alabama A&M. The senior right-hander pitched seven innings surrendering four runs off of six hits. Only one of his runs were earned for Hernandez.
Things started off rocky for the Panthers in the first two innings when Alabama A&M went two jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Prairie View A&M left fielder Jeff Sealy put the Panthers' first run on the board when he drove in Greg Salcido on a ground out to the short stop in the bottom of the second.
Brad Benes then the tied the game for the Panthers in the fifth when he pounded a two-RBI single right field. He was able to drive in right fielder Brett Valley and catcher Trey Price. Price turned in his biggest offense game of his career in an elimination game, batting 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
In the sixth inning Price and Sealy were driven in by a Valley double to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead. Alabama A&M took cut its deficit to 5-4 in the seventh inning, but Price in the eight inning Price came through with his third hit of the night for an RBI to give the Panthers a 6-4 lead.
Prairie View A&M reliever AJ Helms picked up his third save of the season after holding on the Hernandez' lead for two innings of relief. The Panthers will play the loser of Alabama State and Southern's match up at noon on Friday.
