BATON ROUGE, La. – In a game which saw four school records fall along with the second overtime contest in university history, the Prairie View A&M Panthers finished on the wrong end of the ledger as Southern University rallied back to claim a 62-59 double-overtime win on Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
The Panthers were comfortably ahead to open the second half as Courtney Brown rushed in from four yards out to give PV a 35-13 lead following Chris Barrick's PAT with 1:47 left. However, a personal foul by the Panthers on the PAT led to a short kickoff and Southern's Willie Quinn took advantage with a 68-yard return which set up a five-play, 25-yard scoring drive by the Jaguars for a 35-20 advantage to end the third quarter.
A PV fumble on the ensuing drive led to another Southern score as Lenard Tillery rushed in from 13 yards out to draw within one score. Greg Pittman's PAT was good as the Jaguars inched closer down 35-27. The Panther offense had a rare punt on their next drive and once again, the Jaguars hit on a key 3rd-and-11 and used the momentum to draw within one point on a 25-yard pass from Dray Joseph to Lee Doss. Southern converted the two-point attempt and knotted the score at 35-all with 7:21 remaining in regulation.
The Panthers fought back as Jerry Lovelocke hit running back Brown for a 64-yard reception to move into scoring position. Two plays later, Lovelocke rushed in from two yards out to move the Panthers back ahead 42-35 after Barrick's PAT.
However, the momentum was short-lived as Joseph hit Doss for a 64-yard strike on the first play of the drive. The PV defense forced a third down but Southern managed to tie the game once again on a Joseph to Doss pass along with the PAT for a 42-42 lead. Prairie View A&M went to the running game shortly thereafter and continued to score at will as Brown had a 32-yard run followed by a 41-yard touchdown run by Johnta' Hebert to move Panthers back ahead on the ensuing drive. Barrick's PAT was good as the Panthers led 49-42 with 2:40 remaining.
In another bout of déjà vu, Southern hit on a 39-yard reception on 3rd-and-5 and found itself at the PV 11. One play later, the Jaguars found the endzone once again as they knotted the game at 49-all on the ensuing PAT.
The Panthers moved into field goal range on the final drive of regulation but had to settle for overtime as Barrick's 50-yard attempt sailed left at the last possible second.
Playing in their first overtime game since 2006, which was also against Southern, the Panthers surrendered the first score as SU jumped ahead 56-49. The Panthers answered with a vengeance though as Brown rushed in from 12 yards out followed by Barrick's PAT for a 56-all score.
The Panthers came out on offense first in the second overtime but saw a promising drive stall due to a holding call. The team couldn't find the end zone and had to settle for a 24-yard field goal to move ahead 59-56. Southern recorded a first down on the first play of the next possession but moved back after a huge sack and a fumble in which they recovered. After a timeout, SU ended the game as the Joseph and Doss tandem once again connected on a 24-yard game-clinching score.
Both teams were tied at seven entering the second quarter before the Panthers broke open the contest with a 21-point second quarter which featured touchdown runs from Brown, Hebert and a touchdown reception from Dunlap.
PV set new school records in total yardage (772), total plays (106) and rushing touchdowns (7) while Jerry Lovelocke set a school record with 32 completed passes. Brown had a career-high 224 yards rushing while Hebert followed with a career rushing mark of 154 yards. Dunlap led all receivers with 83 yards on eight receptions while Lovelocke finished 32-of-43 for 353 yards. Defensively, Raheem Cardwell led the way with 17 tackles while Jerome Hoard had 2.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.
The Panthers have little time to reflect as they'll return home next week to face Alabama A&M at Blackshear Field on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m.
