The Lady Panthers snapped a 12-game losing streaking with a dominating 3-0 win over Huston-Tillotson on Monday night in the William Nicks Buidling. Junior middle blocker Jade Nelson had a breakout match with a team-high of nine kills in Prairie View A&M's victory.
Nelson's nine kills in the match set a new career-high as a Division I player, and she also added three total blocks to her accomplishments on Monday for a total of 11 points for the Lady Panthers. She was joined by Prairie View A&M's standout middle blocker Magda Zietek, who also chimed in for 11 points against Huston-Tillotson for the win. Zietek finished with seven kills, two service aces and a three total blocks.
Prairie View A&M didn't waste any time taking care of Huston-Tillotson. It breezed through the match 25-10, 25-11, 25-15, unleashing carnage on the Rams for an hour and five minutes before the final point was scored and the match was called.Â
Senior setter Kelsey Espinosa got back to her old tricks and put the Lady Panthers' offense in motion with 26 assists. Espinosa won nine consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week Awards in the 2012 season, but had trudged through a slow start at the beginning of this year. However, in her last two matches Espinosa is averaging 30.5 assists. She set up teammates for a season-high of 35 assists in a 3-1 loss to McNeese State on Saturday.Â
On a night when the front line played a major role in the outcome, the Lady Panthers did not have to work too hard on the back row. Outside hitter Jazmine Hicks had a team-high six digs, followed by libero LaKeisha Allen's five digs.
Prairie View A&M hits the road for a California road trip to participate in the Long Beach State Baden Classic, which begins with a 1 p.m. match up on Friday with Pac 12 opponent Oregon in Long Beach, Calif.
