AUSTIN - The Prairie View A&M volleyball team put a stop to its four-game losing streak with a dominating win over Huston-Tillotson on Wednesday night in Austin. The Lady Panthers rolled over Huston-Tillotson in the 25-20, 25-10, 25-13 win after getting off to a slow start in the first set.
A well-rounded attack fueled the Lady Panthers' victory. Junior middle blocker Jade Nelson was efficient on the attack with seven kills and a .545 attack percentage, while right side and outside hitters Candyce Alexander and Charae Caldwell provided seven kills each to tie for game-highs.
Senior Setter Kelsey Espinosa conducted the offense, setting teammates up for 23 assists. Wednesday night marked Espinosa's fourth game this season with 20 or more assists. Playing in her home town, Espinosa also put down four service aces. It was freshman Malaysia Hope, however, who stole the show in the second set of the match.
Hope came off the bench to with the Lady Panthers holding an 18-10 advantage. She served Huston-Tillotson off of the court, picking up three of her career-high five aces in the process as Prairie View A&M closed the set out on a 7-0 run.
Junior libero LaKeisha Allen led the way for the Lady Panthers defensively with six digs, followed by Candyce Alexander's five-dig night. Prairie View A&M will have a few days off before kicking off its Southwestern Athletic Conference schedule vs. Grambling State at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in Grambling, La.
