SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Prairie View A&M Panthers never could get on track as Texas State jumped out to a three-touchdown lead at the half en route to a 28-3 victory at Bobcat Stadium before a crowd of 20,000-plus spectators on Saturday.
The Panthers (1-1) went three-and-out to begin the game and Texas State (2-0) took advantage immediately as they converted two third down conversions on its opening drive to move into scoring position. The Bobcats' Chris Nutall rushed in from four yards out for the first score of the night as Texas State led 7-0 following the PAT with 9:49 remaining in the quarter.
PV suffered its second straight three-and-out offensively which led to another Texas State score on its second possession. Once again, the Panthers struggled with third down conversions as the Bobcats converted a pair which kept the drive alive and eventually led to a one-yard scamper by Robert Lowe for the 13-0 lead with 2:19 on the clock.
The Panther offense finally began to click on their third drive as Gabe Dunlap caught a seven-yard pass from Jerry Lovelocke on 3rd-and-5. Unfortunately, the drive stalled as the Panthers were forced to punt for the third time.
The Panther defense finally held serve as they forced Texas State to punt for the first time early in the second quarter. Offensively, the Panthers had no problem moving the ball as they converted a pair of third down conversions before stalling at the Texas State 15. The Panthers attempted a 32-yard field goal on fourth down but came up short as a low snap doomed the kick from the start.
On the first play of Texas State's next drive, a Panther missed tackle led to a 77-yard touchdown run by Nutall for the 20-0 lead. The PAT was good as Texas State led 21-0 with 5:06 remaining.
After a pair of punts, the Panthers switched quarterbacks and marched 34 yards to the Texas State 15. However, a false start moved PV back five yards followed by a sack and a fumble which killed the drive and gave Texas State the ball. The Bobcats attempted a 64-yard field goal to end the half but fell short as they claimed a 21-0 halftime lead.
Prairie View A&M finally jumped on the board on its second offensive possession of the second half as Chris Barrick nailed a career-long 47-yard field goal. However, the momentum was short-lived as an offsides penalty by the Panthers on 4th-and-1 at the PV 13 led to an 8-yard score by Texas State's Terrance Franks.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Panthers had another promising drive stall once again deep in the redzone as Texas State batted down Lovelocke's pass at the Bobcat 13. Neither team would score from that point as Texas State captured its 11th consecutive win over the Panthers as its first as an FBS member.
Offensively, PV finished with 227 yards (182 P, 45 R) while Texas State amassed 408 yards (242 R, 166 P). Lovelocke passed for 109 yards on 16-of-27 attempts while Deandre Cooper caught eight passes for 74 yards. Redshirt senior linebacker Raheem Cardwell, senior linebacker Chuck Obi and redshirt sophomore cornerback Dietrich Johnson accounted for eight tackles apiece.
The Panthers return to action next weekend on the road in Baton Rouge, La. as they'll face Southern at 6 p.m. in A.W. Mumford Stadium.
