WACO, Texas – The Prairie View A&M women's tennis team kicked off the 2014 campaign this past weekend with a pair of matches in Waco, Texas against nationally ranked powers Ohio State and Baylor.
The Lady Panthers dropped a 7-0 decision to Ohio State on Friday as OSU claimed the first two matches in doubles play by a score of 6-0. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Brittany Harrell and Taylor LeFridge claimed a game against OSU's Sandy Niehaus/Grainne O'Neill but the match came to a halt due to the No. 2 and No. 3 matches finishing early.
In singles play, OSU claimed all six matches with LeFridge battling to a 6-3, 6-0 decision at the No. 2 spot while Christine Gwodog fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. PVAMU's Sydney Thomas fell to OSU's Ferny Angeles Paz 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 followed by Payton Gore's 6-2, 6-1 loss to Sandy Niehaus at the No. 5 singles. Harrell fell by a margin of 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 action followed by Donielle Richard's 6-0, 6-1 loss in No. 6 singles.
"We had a really good start against Ohio State," said head coach John Cochran. "Doubles played a little scared as they played outside but the singles were really engaged as the scores didn't align with what actually took place in the match. We had a couple of five-ball rallies and good intensity as we ended that match on a pretty good note."
On Sunday, the Lady Panthers returned to action for a match-up against No. 19 Baylor and fell 7-0. Cochran altered his lineup and moved Gwogog and Thomas to the No. 1 spot for doubles while Erika Bond and Gore moved to No. 2 singles. PVAMU fell 6-0 at No. 1 and 6-1 at No. 2 while the No. 3 tandem of Richard and Maria Lackey didn't complete their match due to the first two matches ending in BU's favor.
Freshman Maria Lackey had the most impressive match of the evening as she went three sets with Baylor's Abby Stainback. Lackey dropped the opener 6-1 but regrouped and pulled out a 6-4 win to force a tiebreaker which went in Stainback's favor by a margin of 10-5. Lefridge dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to No. 38 Kiah Generette followed by a 6-0, 6-0 win from BU's Blair Shankle over Gwodog. Thomas fell 6-1, 6-0 to Alex Leatu at the No. 3 spot while Richard and Bond dropped a pair of 6-0 decisions at No. 4 and 5 singles.
"I pushed everyone up in the lineup against Baylor as I had several freshmen out there for the first time and they were overwhelmed," stated Cochran. "We were missing balls as the nerves got to us. We finally got it together as Taylor LeFridge played an intense match while Maria Lackey fought really hard. She went up 2-0 in the tiebreaker but got away from doing what got her into the tiebreaker and that was attacking her opponent. Her opponent eventually figured it out and won the match.
"Overall, we had a good match but I think nerves got the best us and caused us to do things they normally wouldn't do on the court," added Cochran.
The Lady Panthers return to action this Saturday with a neutral site match-up versus Maryland-Baltimore County in Corpus Christi, Texas at noon.
"I'm looking to see this weekend have we learned anything moving forward and getting better as a team."
