HOUSTON – Prairie View A&M's 2014 series opener didn't go as planned as Houston Baptist picked up three wins in three contrasting fashions at Husky Field this past weekend.
Houston Baptist 4, Prairie View A&M 3
HBU drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth as they rallied for a 4-3 win over the Panthers.
Walter Wells and Greg Salcido reached base in the third and were rewarded for their efforts on Dominiq Harris' two-RBI single for a 2-0 lead. HBU trimmed its deficit to 2-1 in the sixth with a two-out RBI single but the Panthers regained the run in the seventh as Robert Cossey doubled home Grant Dougherty, who reached on a leadoff single.
A pair of PVAMU fielding errors in the bottom frame paved the way for HBU to draw within 3-2 followed by a game-tying single from Zach Nehrir. A one-out double play ended PVAMU's scoring opportunity in the eighth while HBU used a pair of sacrifice bunts in the bottom half to move ahead 4-3 as PVAMU went down in order during the ninth.
Jordan Stewart fell to 0-1 on the season in a relief appearance while Cossey had two of PVAMU's six hits. Harris led the Panthers with two RBIs.
Houston Baptist 12, Prairie View A&M 5
Prairie View A&M gave up seven runs in the first falling, 12-5, to Houston Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
For PVAMU (0-2), A.J. Helms (0-1) took the loss, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits in 3.1 innings for the Panthers.
Robert Cossey went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run for the Panthers. Greg Salcido homered and drove in two runs.
Salcido gave the Panthers the lead with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first, but the Huskies answered back by sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning.
Houston Baptist 6, Prairie View A&M 2
Prairie View A&M gave up four unanswered runs falling 6-2 to Houston Baptist on Friday at Husky Field.
Jonathan Mata (0-1) took the loss for PVAMU (0-1), allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits, striking out five and walking four in six innings.
Cody Den Beste went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, and Robert Cossey went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the Panthers.
Ryan Lower (1-0) allowed five hits, two runs, only one earned and struck out three without a walk to pick up the victory for the HBU (1-0).
Curtis Jones went 2-for-4 with a walk, and drove in three runs, while Josh Martinez went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run. Austin Saenz singled and scored twice.
PVAMU tied it when Dan Beste led off the second with a homer to right. The Panthers took the lead in the third when Cossey led off with a single, and scored on a HBU error.
The Huskies answered in the bottom of the third when Saenz led off with single and later scored on a single to right by Jones. HBU struck for a pair in the bottom of the fourth, with a single that scored two runs.
HBU added two more in the eighth as Martinez doubled down the leftfield line, then Saenz drew a walk. Jones drove in both runs with another single to right.
Due to on-going construction at the PVAMU Baseball Stadium, all of the team's February home match-ups have been moved to Houston and will be played at the Houston Astros MLB Academy located at 2801 South Victory Drive in Houston.
The Panthers will host Texas College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
