BOX SCORE 2 BATON ROUGE, La. – Prairie View A&M picked up an important doubleheader sweep in two contrasting styles on Saturday as they claimed a 10-9 comeback win and a 13-3 victory over Southern University.
In game one, the Panthers overcame a six-run deficit with seven runs over the final three innings for a 10-9 win.
Southern led 2-0 after the first inning before Cody Den Beste's RBI single in the third for a 2-1 deficit. The Jaguars scored twice in the third and fourth frames to lead 6-1 but Jeff Sealy and Christian Krushall's RBIs kept the Panthers within four runs as they trailed 6-3 in the fifth. The deficit grew to 9-3 as Southern tacked on three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings but the Panthers battled back with a solid seventh.
Greg Salcido opened the seventh with a double and back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Walter Wells with no outs. Both Wells and Colby Hines were hit by pitches for a 9-5 margin followed by Robert Cossey's two-RBI double for a 9-7 deficit. Den Beste narrowed the gap to 9-8 with a sacrifice followed by Sealy's RBI for the tying run.
With two outs in the eighth, Krushall doubled and an SU error led to Wells reaching base and both runners in scoring position. Hines drove in the winning run with a bunt which scored Krushall while Sean Hollis held the fort down defensively with scoreless eighth and ninth frames.
Den Beste led the way with a 3-for-5 performance which included two RBIs. Cossey and Sealy also drove in two RBIs each while Hollis improved to 1-0 on the season.
After a comeback effort in game one, the Panthers turned the tables and took control from the beginning in game two as they claimed a 13-3 decision.
An error led to PVAMU's first run in the opening inning while Dominiq Harris recorded a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Salcido drove in the third run followed by a passed ball which scored Salcido for a 4-0 decision.
Grant Dougherty drove in Harris for a 5-0 decision in the third followed by an RBI from Wells which upped the margin to 6-0. Hines made the score 7-0 with a RBI single as a wild pitch scored Hines for an 8-0 lead.
Hines hit a two-run homer in the fifth to lead 10-0 but Southern answered as they crossed home two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Panthers returned to their scoring ways in the eighth as Wells singled home Dougherty while Cossey scored an unearned run in addition to Harris' RBI in the ninth.
Salcido finished 4-for-6 with an RBI while Den Beste, Sealy, Dougherty, Wells and Hines finished with two hits apiece. Harris, Wells and Hines finished with two RBIs with Cossey scoring three times.
Chadd Flick improved to 1-2 with the win as Charles Philpott came on in relief and allowed four innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts.
