Panthers Showcase Offensive Firepower In Sweep Over Grambling State

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

GRAMBLING, La. – Prairie View A&M captured a key road series with plenty of offensive fireworks as they claimed a 6-5, 12-6 doubleheader win over Grambling State on Saturday at Wilbert Ellis Field.

In game one, Prairie View A&M won a hard-fought opener as they held off Grambling State for a 6-5 decision.

PVAMU wasted no time in scoring as Greg Salcido singled with two outs followed by a Dominiq Harris walk in the first inning.  Grant Dougherty drove in the game's first run as his RBI single led to a 1-0 lead.  The lead was brief though as GSU hit a leadoff triple in the bottom half and tied the game at 1-all following Juan Bueno's RBI groundout but a two-run third highlighted by Cody Den Beste and Harris' RBI singles moved PVAMU back ahead 3-1.

Walter Wells led the fourth off with a double and upped the lead to 4-1 on Josh Jefferson's RBI single.  Grambling State cut its deficit to 4-2 in the fifth and closed to within 4-3 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Den Beste opened the seventh with a leadoff double to force a pitching change.  The Panthers countered the change with even more offense as Salcido doubled home Den Beste followed by Dougherty's RBI triple for a 6-3 advantage.  Grambling State hit a two-run shot in the seventh to draw within 6-5 but freshman reliever Jordan Stewart held down the fort during the final three innings.

Salcido and Dougherty led the way with three hits apiece with Dougherty accounting for two RBIS.  Den Beste and Salcido both scored two runs apiece.  On the mound, Jonathan Mata picked up his second straight win he recorded four strikeouts in six innings of work.

Game two resembled an old-fashioned SWAC slugfest as the teams combined for 32 hits in a 12-6 PVAMU victory.

It took three innings to score for the Panthers as Jeff Sealy recorded a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded followed by Harris' two-RB I double.  Grambling State scored a run in the third but PVAMU blasted ahead in the seventh as Salcido recorded a two-RBI double along with Wells' RBI double and Colby Hines' RBI single for the 7-1 advantage.

The lead was cut to 7-4 in the bottom frame as GSU forced the Panthers deep into their bullpen with three runs.  However, the momentum was brief as PVAMU went on a power surge as Harris hit a two-run homer in the eighth followed by Dougherty's three-run homer in the ninth.

A.J. Helms improved to 1-2 on the season while Harris and Den Beste had a game-high three hits.  Harris added four RBIs along with three from Dougherty with Dougherty, Den Beste and Harris scoring twice.

The series wraps up on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Grambling, La.
