Dougherty's Grand Slam Lifts Panthers To 5-1 Win Over UAPB

BOX SCORE

Prairie View A&M catcher Grant Dougherty sent the crowd home in a festive mood with a bases loaded grand slam in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-1 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday afternoon at the PVAMU Baseball Stadium.

Saturday's game was nearly a mirror image of Friday's doubleheader as both teams relied heavily on its pitching to get them out of key situations.

Both teams had early opportunities to score as PVAMU left runners on second and third after the first inning while UAPB loaded the bases in the second but came up short as PVAMU starter Chadd Flick recorded an inning-ending strikeout.

The Panthers scored the game's first run in the fourth as Dominiq Harris led the inning off with a single, stole second and reached third via a UAPB throwing error.  Greg Salcido drove in Harris on the next at-bat for a 1-0 lead.  With two outs in the seventh, UAPB led the inning off with a double and eventually tied the game with a RBI single by Tyler Oertle.

UAPB had a runner at third with two outs in the ninth but reliever Jordan Stewart came on in relief of Charles Philpott and forced an inning-ending grounder to second.  In the bottom of the ninth, Harris and Salcido drew consecutive walks which led to a UAPB pitching change.  Christian Krushall loaded the bases after another walk which paved the way for Grant Dougherty's grand slam over the left field fence for the final score.

Dougherty led the way with a 2-for-4 performance and four RBIs while Stewart picked up the win.  Philpott led all PVAMU pitchers with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.

The Panthers head to College Station, Texas on Tuesday night for a contest at Texas A&M beginning at 6 p.m.
