Prairie View A&M freshman outfielder Cody Den Beste earned his first career honor as he was named the SWAC's Freshman of the Year for the 2014 season. In addition, senior first baseman Dominiq Harris and senior third baseman Greg Salcido both earned spots on the 2014 All-SWAC Second Team.
A native of Wilmington, Calif., Den Beste finished the regular season as PVAMU's leader in triples (3), batting average with two outs (.385), percentage reached as a leadoff hitter (.462), percentage advancing runners (.577) and is tied atop its list in stolen bases (7). Den Beste finished the 2014 regular season campaign with a .300 batting average, 71 total bases, 48 hits, 37 runs scored, 25 RBIs and three home runs.
Den Beste becomes the first Panther since Wrandal Taylor in 2005 to earn SWAC Freshman of the Year honors.
Harris capped off his decorated career at Prairie View A&M with a spot on the All-SWAC Second Team as the first baseman led the Panthers in slugging percentage (.534), on-base percentage (.437), RBIs (48), home runs (7), total bases (86) and walks (33). The Missouri City, Texas native batted .317 on the season with 51 total hits.
Playing third base on a full-time basis this past season, Salcido had a solid year as he led the Panthers with 16 doubles. The Rowland Heights, Calif. native ranked third on the team in batting average (.306) while also driving in 35 RBIs with 80 total bases, 53 hits, 23 runs scored and three home runs.
The All-SWAC trio along with the rest of the team begins postseason play on Wednesday morning at 9.a.m. against Alabama A&M at the MLB Urban Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium. A live audio stream will be available on www.swac.org.
