NEW ORLEANS – Prairie View A&M's baseball season came to an end as a five-run fourth inning by Jackson State created a hill too high to climb as JSU claimed an 8-4 win in the semifinals of the2014 SWAC Baseball Tournament.
Down 1-0 in the first, PVAMU tied it at 1-all in the second on Edward Robledo's RBI ground-rule double in the second. The Panthers missed a prime opportunity to move ahead in the third as they stranded a runner in scoring position with no outs while JSU moved ahead with a run in the third for a 2-1 advantage.
Prairie View A&M loaded the bases in the fourth and finally broke through as Cody Den Beste hit a two-RBI double for a 3-2 lead. However, JSU answered once again in the bottom half with a five-run inning which was partly due to PVAMU mistakes. JSU crossed home its eighth run in the sixth while PVAMU moved to within four runs in the seventh as Robert Cossey hit a two-out triple followed by Jeff Sealy's RBI single. However, the Panthers would fail to record a hit the remainder of the game as their season came to a disappointing end.
PVAMU starter Charles Philpott struck out seven in the losing cause while Den Beste and Cossey had two hits apiece.
