BOX SCORE After a subpar outing on Saturday, the Prairie View A&M closed out its SWAC schedule in style on Sunday as they jumped on Southern 16-9 at Tankersley Field.
The Panthers wasted no time in jumping ahead as Robert Cossey hit a three-run shot over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead in the first. One inning later, Prairie View A&M broke the game open with a seven-run second as Dougherty hit a two-RBI double followed by Cossey's two-RBI double to left. Senior outfielder Colby Hines also got in on the act with a three-run homer over the right field fence for a 10-0 lead after two innings of action.
Southern crossed home two runs in the fourth but PVAMU kept charging as Josh Jefferson and Grant Dougherty hit RBIs for a 12-2 margin. An RBI single by Hines in the fifth crossed home another run for the Panthers while a RBI triple by Greg Salcido in the sixth increased PVAMU's score to 16-2.
Southern began to heat up offensively as they avoided the run-rule with a five-run seventh. Southern added two more runs in the ninth but the early PVAMU onslaught proved to be too much for them to overcome as the Panthers solidified the No. 3 seed out of the SWAC West for the upcoming SWAC Baseball Tournament.
Jefferson, Walter Wells and Cody Den Deste finished with three hits each with Cossey accounting for six RBIs. Hines added four RBIs while Dougherty drove in three runs. Charles Philpott picked up his first career win as he struck out four in six innings of work.
The Panthers will step out of SWAC play on Tuesday as they'll face Houston at 6 p.m. on the UH campus.
