The Prairie View A&M University volleyball team will open its 2016 season this weekend in the Baylor Tournament.
Â
The Lady Panthers will face Texas A&M Corpus Christi Friday at 4 p.m. before facing host Baylor Saturday at 11 a.m. and Texas Rio Grande Valley at 5 p.m.
Â
PVAMU volleyball finished with five wins its final nine matches of the season with a roster of 11 underclassmen including nine freshmen.
Â
Second-year head coach Tacho Tyler likes where her team is coming out of camp despite battling through injuries that has created lineup adjustments.
Â
"The injuries are disappointing because we were really meshing well," Tyler said. "We have a different look right now, putting different pieces together. It benefits us in that some young ladies who may not have played a lot have to step to the forefront. It helps us in the long run while making sure our injured players rest and recover fully prior to conference play."
Â
The core of the 2016 roster is young as well, with just four upperclassmen on the roster. With the experience gained last season, last year's youth has matured and grown on the court. A bonus thus far has been this year's incoming class has impressed in camp.
Â
"We've seen more of a junior look from our sophomores," Tyler said. "Our freshmen have really stepped up and cemented their roles already. That's a benefit for us to have freshmen come in and be in the role you envisioned when recruiting them while creating competition, which is always good."
