Volleyball To Open Home Schedule; Pediatric Cancer Awareness Game Tuesday

Home, finally!

That is where the Prairie View A&M University volleyball team will compete Tuesday and Wednesday, opening the home schedule against St. Thomas and Incarnate Word, respectively, at 6:30 p.m. in the William J. Nicks Building.

Tuesday's match begins the mid-point of the schedule in which Prairie View A&M volleyball will play nine of its next 10 matches at home, with the only road trip to Texas Southern Friday. The Lady Panthers will not compete outside of Texas again until November.

"It feels good to be home," said PVAMU head volleyball coach Tacho Tyler. "We've literally been on the road since the start of the season. It's going to be great playing at home in front of #pvnation. October is definitely a home court advantage month I'm hoping we can take advantage of."

The Lady Panthers are playing their best volleyball of the season in the past two weeks, winning three of the last five matches, including a weekend sweep at defending SWAC champ Jackson State Friday and at Mississippi Valley State Sunday.

"We really came together as team over the weekend," Tyler said. "We played with great resiliency, passion, and perfect effort."

Tuesday's home opener will benefit pediatric cancer awareness. Both PVAMU volleyball and St. Thomas will wear special gold shoe laces, and fans will have the chance to purchase shoe laces for $5.

The Panther Student Body will also participate in the event, as the dorm with the most residents in attendance and the dorm that buys the most shoelaces will win prizes.

"Giving back is always important," Tyler said. "In volleyball, we always support breast cancer awareness because we are women and will continue to do support, but pediatric cancer is just as significant and important. I have a small son, so I can only imagine the amount of support I would need. It feels good to donate toward the efforts of ending it. Especially with something as simple as $5 shoe laces, so we teamed with Go 4 The Goal, which helps kids with cancer achieve their goals."
