Â
Panther Nation began arriving on campus early this week and The Hill has had great energy all week.
Â
"Prairie View's homecoming rivals anyone in Black College Football," PVAMU head coach
Willie Simmons said. "Homecoming is always a very special time anywhere, but especially here on The Hill. I'm looking forward to a great environment, an electric stadium…Our players understand we want to give the fans a great homecoming and something to be proud of."
Â
Prairie View A&M (2-4 overall, 2-2 SWAC) played one of the most challenging schedules in the history of the program in the first half of the season, featuring three teams ranked in the FCS Top 25 among the first six contests.
Â
"The bye week came at great time for us," said PVAMU head coach
Willie Simmons. "It allowed us the chance to get some guys back healthy. Whenever you play that type of schedule in back-to-back weeks, naturally you're going to get guys injured. We've had ankles, knees, shoulders, etc. You name it, we've had it over the course of that six week schedule. It gave us the chance to get some guys back healthy, and gave us a chance to get some young guys some work."
Â
Bacone College (2-6, 2-4 Central States Football League) hail from Muskogee, Okla. and has played a tough schedule of their own, playing three nationally-ranked teams in NAIA football.
Â
"They are a team that's going to try and get in your face," said Simmons of the Warriors. "They are going to bring a lot of pressures. With them knowing we have a young quarterback (redshirt freshman
Neiko Hollins), I'm sure they are going to try to get after him a lot. Our sack numbers (allowed) aren't great. We only game up one last week (to Alcorn) but over the course of the season, we have allowed 18 this season, which is three per game. I'm sure they'll try to come after us on the offensive side and force him to be mature and make accurate throws…On offense, they'll try to use a lot of motions and shifts and formations to try to create some mismatches. We'll have to be sound in our alignments and knowing where they're playmakers are and try to neutralize them in the open field."
Â
The Panthers are mindful not to look past the Warriors and look ahead to the latter part of the season.
Â
"For our guys it's about understanding that in the game of football, you can never overlook an opponent," Simmons said. "Watching football last week (during the bye week), I think that was shown. There were plenty of upsets last week, and there've been plenty of upsets all season. If you go into a game thinking 'hey, we can overlook these guys,' and look down the line, before you know it you'll be looking at a deficit. Our guys understand that, plus we haven't played a complete game yet, and that's our goal - to come out and play a complete and sound football game in all three phases. Â This is about the time we need to put that together."
