Panthers To Play Final Road Game At Jackson State

11/2/2018 10:00:00 AM

The Prairie View A&M University football team will play its final road game of the 2018 regular season Saturday in a 2 p.m. game at Jackson State.

The Panthers (3-5 overall, 2-2 SWAC) and Tigers (3-4, 2-2) will look to get start November on a winning note in the contest at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Panther Sports Network Radio Broadcast begins with Panthers Countdown To Kickoff at 1:45 p.m. at pvpanthers.com/jsugame. The game can also be viewed live online free of charge at ESPN3.com.

It's the second of three straight games against the SWAC's Eastern Division for Prairie View A&M, which is coming off a 27-13 home loss to Alcorn last week. The special teams unit led to the Panthers' touchdown last week on the 81-yard kickoff return by Bernard Goodwater, the first kickoff return in touchdown in more than two years.

Both teams are looking to keep SWAC Championship game hopes alive, and need wins to do so. The Panthers trail Southern by one game in the standings and are tied with Grambling in the loss column in the West. Jackson State is one loss behind Alcorn State and tied with Alabama State and Alabama A&M (AAMU ineligible for postseason) in the loss column in the East.

"You control what you can control, and what we control right now is we play Jackson State," PVAMU head coach Eric Dooley said. "We just have to take care of our part, and whatever takes place at the end of the year it was destined to be. We remained focused, and understand we're trying to take it game by game, because it is a competitive conference. We must prepare daily for everyone, and we've prepared daily for Jackson State going into a hostile environment."

For Jackson State, The Tigers are coming off a 41-7 loss at Southern on Saturday and will face a SWAC Western Division opponent for the second straight week. Defensive Coordinator John Hendrick was named interim head coach of JSU on Sunday, replacing Tony Hughes.

"Their defense is playing steading, and their defense has been playing steady for a number of years," Dooley said. "Coach Hendrick does a good job with that defense. (Offensive coordinator Derrick McCall) has been around the conference for a long time…We have to make sure we play our game, and we play our game for 60 minutes. We know it's going to be a physical contest, and we accept the challenge and look forward to a great game on Saturday."
