Women's Basketball Falls to Grambling

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas –  The Prairie View A&M University women's basketball team fell to Grambling State 75-68 in a game that came down to the wire, Saturday afternoon inside the William J. Nicks Arena.
 
Shala Dobbins paced the Lady Panthers in scoring with 21 points in 37 minutes of action. Talisha Presley added 14 points on 54 percent shooting from the floor. La'Neique Nealey registered her second double-double of the season tallying 12 points and 14 rebounds. 
 
Prairie View broke fast out of the gate, jumping out to a 6-2 advantage less than three minutes into the contest thanks to buckets from Presley, Newman and Dobbins. However, GSU would take a 9-8 lead with 5:49 left in the quarter. The Lady Panthers struggled offensively in the following minutes, which allowed Grambling to take a double digit lead with less than three minutes to go in the opening quarter. The Lady Panthers battled back, outscoring GSU 9-3 as the first quarter came to a close. At the end of the first quarter PVAMU trailed 23-20
 
The Lady Panthers struggled mightily shooting during the second stanza shooting a meager 20 percent.  GSU took advantage leading by as many as 11. With 4:31 remaining in the first half PVAMU trailed 33-22. Prairie View A&M finally got going offensively however, they were unable to cut the lead to less than nine. At the end of the first half GSU led 39-29. 
 
PVAMU had a sluggish start to the second half, falling behind by double digits. With 6:39 remaining in the third period the Lady Tigers held a 47-36 advantage. The Lady Panthers would roar back outscoring Grambling 18-7 in the final minutes of the 3rd quarter. Shala Dobbins drilled a three pointer to cap a stretch in which the junior guard scored eight consecutive points for the Lady Panthers to cut the lead to one. As the third frame came to a conclusion GSU cling to a 54-53 lead.
 
Both teams traded baskets as the final 10 minutes of action began. The Lady Panthers knotted the game at 58 a piece as Jordyn Penniman buried a free throw from the charity stripe. Prairie View A&M would take the lead 60-58 with 6:47 left in the contest with a lay in by Mariah Campbell. It was the Lady Panthers first lead since 5:49 in the opening quarter when they led 9-8.  Campbell would cash in on another layup to give PVAMU a 64-61 lead with three minutes remaining. The Lady Tigers took the lead on a three pointer with 2:12 remaining in regulation, and would not relinquish it from that point on, outscoring the Lady Panthers 9-4 in the final minutes of the contest.
 
The Lady Panthers will return to the hardwood for action on Monday, February 12th as they take on Jackson State inside the William J. Nicks Arena. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
