The Panthers opened the season last weekend in the Andre Dawson Classic in New Orleans. PVAMU led in every game before falling 8-7 to Alabama St. last Friday, 8-4 to Alcorn St. last Saturday, and 10-7 to Illinois-Chicago this past Sunday.
Â
Daniel Lingua led PVAMU at the plate, batting .444 (4-of-9) with three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases in all three games. Ezekiel Bear played in every game with a pair of starts, batting .400 (4-of-10) with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Â
On the mound,
Darrien Williams was stellar in his opening day start against Alabama State, throwing 5 2/3 innings allowing three hits and two unearned runs with one walk in 10 strikeouts.
Â
"Overall, offensively we have to do better with our situational hitting," said PVAMU head coach
Auntwan Riggins. "We have to improve our average with two outs, two-strike hitting, and hitting with runners in scoring position."
Â
The Panthers were rained out Wednesday vs. Nicholls and Thursday against Huston-Tillotson. Houston-Victoria (2-5) were able to get a pair of games in this week, losing a Wednesday doubleheader to Texas A&M International.
Â
"You always want to get back to playing cleaning up mistakes from the following weekend," Riggins said. "We are very excited about getting back to playing."
Â
NICHOLLS GAME RESCHEDULED FOR MAY 2: Tuesday's rained out game vs. Nicholls has been rescheduled for Wednesday May 2 at 3 p.m. at Tankersley Field.
