LORMAN, Miss. - The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team defeated Alcorn State 96-76 for their sixth consecutive win at the Davey L. Whitney Complex on Thursday night.
Once again
Shala Dobbins led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 28 points on 46 percent shooting from the field.
Dominique Newman scored 21 points on 4-5 shooting from beyond the three point line in 25 minutes of action.
Talisha Presley added 16 points, three assists and a pair of steals.
The squads traded baskets in the opening minutes of the contest. Dobbins layup gave PVAMU a 10-9 lead with 6:09 to go in the first quarter. The game remained highly contested over the next several minutes as the teams traded the lead, and the Lady Braves led 15-14 as a little more than three minutes remained on the clock in the period.
Prairie View finished the quarter strong outscoring the Lady Braves in the final minutes. Newman scored six of the Lady Panthers final eight points of the quarter to give PVAMU a slim lead going into the second quarter. At the end of the first ten minutes of play the Lady Panthers led 23-21.
The second quarter, was much like the first, a back and forth affair. A Presley jumper gave the Lady Panthers a two point lead with less than six minutes to go in the first half. Seconds later, Newman's three pointer gave PV a 35-30 with 5:24 left. Prairie View A&M remained in the driver's seat for the remainder of the half, however Alcorn State stayed within striking distance, reducing the PV advantage 42-40 with 2:10 remaining in the quarter. PVAMU finished the half on a strong note, as Presley's jumper gave Prairie View a 47-44 lead going into halftime.
The contest remained extremely competitive, and was a defensive struggle during the opening minutes of the third quarter. A pair of converted
Mariah Campbell free throws gave Prairie View a 52-49 advantage with 5:52 to go in the period. The Lady Panthers outscored Alcorn 9-2 in the following minutes and took a 61-52 lead late in the quarter. The scoring run was keyed by baskets from Dobbins, Newman,
Jhyrah Cobb, and
La'Neique Nealey. Heading into the final quarter, Prairie View held a double digit lead 65-55.
The Lady Panthers put the game away in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Braves 13-6 at the start of the fourth quarter to take a 17 point advantage. The run was keyed by baskets from Dobbins, Presley, Newman, and Cobb. PVAMU led by as many as 22 points in the final minutes of the contest. Alcorn State would get no closer than 17 points, as PVAMU wrapped up their 13th conference victory of the 2017-2018 season.
The Lady Panthers returns to action on Saturday afternoon, March 3rd to take on Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana .Tip off set for 3 p.m.
