PRAIRIE VIEW – After a convincing win over arch-rival Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M football makes a return business trip to H-Town take on the University of Houston Saturday at 7 p.m. in TDECU Stadium.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Panthers (1-0) must contend with a formidable home-field advantage, as Houston has won each of its past four home openers and boasts a 22-4 home record dating back to the 2015 season.
Prairie View head coach
Eric Dooley and the Panthers understand the challenges that the Cougars present -- particularly on offense -- but they aren't intimidated in the least bit. The second-year coach said the team is focused on executing the small things and keeping a disciplined, even-keeled mindset as kickoff approaches.
"They've got a phenomenal quarterback that's probably one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country, so we've got our work cut out for us right there," Dooley said. "Plus, it's an FBS opponent we're going to be facing, so we understand the magnitude (of the challenge ahead) in all three phases of the game. But it's football to me. You know, it doesn't change. We still have to block and tackle, and that's the way we approach it no matter who we play."
Scouting the Competition:
- Houston (0-1) enters the contest looking to rebound from a 49-31 defeat to FBS No. 4 Oklahoma. With first-year coach Dana Holgorsen at the helm, the Cougars return a vast majority of 2018's offensive production. The offense returns 91.2 percent of its 2018 rushing yards, 99.8 percent of its passing yards, 82.3 percent of its receiving yards and 85.3 percent of its scoring. Leading the way is quarterback D'Eriq King, who threw for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running for 103 yards and a score versus the Sooners.
- Despite six new starters on defense, Houston continued its penchant for splash plays on that side of the ball. The Cougar defense has recorded at least one takeaway in 18 straight games, the second-best active streak in the country, trailing Indiana (19).
Panthers News and Notes:
- Reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week
Dawonya Tucker enters the game as the nation's leading rusher among FCS schools. The senior needed just 11 totes to gain 188 yards against Texas Southern, scoring three touchdowns and accounting for 298 all-purpose yards.
- The Panthers come into the contest with the third-ranked total offense in the nation, amassing 615 yards against Texas Southern. Redshirt senior quarterback
Jalen Morton set a personal-best in passing yards with 350 against the Tigers. It was the first 300-yard passing game for Morton's collegiate career, and the first for a PVAMU player since
Neiko Hollins in 2017.
- Junior linebacker
Tre'Shaud Smith became the first Panther since
Willie Green (Oct. 1, 2018) to earn conference defensive player of the week honors after making 12 stops – two for loss – and a sack in his PVAMU debut.
- The Panthers' offense has scored at least 30 points in 50 percent of its games under Dooley. Prairie View A&M has hit that number in six of the team's 12 games played.
