Baseball readies for mid-week tilts at HBU, Lamar

PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M baseball team (2-10) steps out of conference play for a pair of mid-week road contests as the Panthers head to Houston Baptist for a 2 p.m. tilt Tuesday and face Lamar at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

The Panthers look to shake off last weekend's setbacks versus Southern. This begins a busy stretch for the Panthers, who have five contests scheduled over the next week, all on the road.

Senior Andrew Garcia leads the team in batting average (.323), hits (10) and runs scored (5). Close behind is junior David Garcia, who is hitting .320 on the season. Freshman Brayden Johnson shares the team lead in runs scored with A. Garcia and is hitting .300 on the season.

The Panthers look to reverse eight-game skids versus both Houston Baptist and Lamar.

Tuesday at Houston Baptist – RHP Derrick Curry (0-1)
Wednesday at Lamar – RHP Matthew Sandoval (1-1, 2.53 ERA, 11.2 IP)

Scouting Houston Baptist:
– The Panthers will be tasked with shutting down a potent lineup, led by Johnny Gonzales, who is hitting .391 with five doubles, a home run, a triple, five RBIs and seven runs. Todd Jackson is hitting .364 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and four runs for the Huskies (2-10). Brandon Bena and Jake Miller each have 10 hits.

Scouting Lamar:
– Avery George and Kelby Weyler lead the Lamar hitting corps with averages of .391 and .375, respectively. George has 18 hits, nine RBI and six runs scored on the season, while Weyler has 15 hits, seven RBI, six runs scored and a pair of doubles. Left-hander Grason Wright is expected to make his first start of the season for the Cardinals.
