Baseball takes on Houston-Victoria, Texas State in mid-week tilts

PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M baseball team returns to the diamond for a pair of mid-week tilts. The action begins Tuesday as the Panthers (3-14) host Houston-Victoria (3-10) for a 3 p.m. contest at Tankersley Field, and then the Panthers will hit the road for a 4 p.m. matchup at Texas State (12-4) on Wednesday.

The Panthers look to rebound from a series loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Sophomore Kellen Rogers is producing on the offensive side of the deck, leading the team with a .375 batting average with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. Freshman Brayden Johnson has been in a groove as of late, leading the team in hits (14), RBI (11) and doubles (3) while sitting tied for second on the team with six runs scored.

The Panthers are 2-2 all-time versus Houston-Victoria but have not defeated Texas State in any of the teams' prior 10 meetings.

RHP Derrick Curry (0-2, 5.1 IP, two strikeouts)
RHP Tracy Warren (0-2, 8.2 IP, 10 strikeouts)
RHP Matthew Sandoval (1-2, 3.78 ERA, 16.2 IP, six strikeouts)

Scouting Houston-Victoria:
– The Jaguars are trending upward following a 1-9 start to the year. Houston-Victoria have won two of their last three, averaging 13 runs per game in said wins. Luis Vargas leads the offense with an impressive .440 batting average, having posted 22 hits, 16 RBI, 11 runs scored and eight extra-base hits (five doubles, three home runs). Garrett Harrison follows with a .333 batting average with 16 hits, eight RBI and eight runs scored.

Scouting Texas State:
– The Bobcats are off to an impressive 12-4 start to the season, with wins over Houston, Baylor, Rice and Lamar. Wesley Faison has powered the Texas State offense with five home runs and 12 RBI while hitting a team-best .364 on the season. John Wuthrich has four homers to his credit with 16 hits, 15 runs scored, 11 RBI and a .314 batting average.
