PRAIRIE VIEW – The 1970s were a really good time for Prairie View A&M track and field.
With names like Patricia Jackson and Evans White dominating on the national stage and Barbara Jacket leading PVAMU to unprecedented heights in team competition, the Panthers held a claim as one of the leading factories of sprinting and relay standouts in the country.
A pair of those names went on to find success on the global stage, as Debra Sapenter and Fred Newhouse made the trek to Montreal to take part in the 1976 Summer Olympics.
What resulted were a trio of exceptional performances resulting in a gold and silver for Newhouse in the United States Men's 4x400-meter relay and 400-meter dash, respectively, while Sapenter picked up a silver as part of the United States Women's 4x400-meter relay team.
Below is the finals of the 1976 Olympic Men's 400-meter dash, where you can watch Newhouse etch his name into the annals of the sport.
