BOX SCORE 2 LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Prairie View A&M baseball team (0-3) dropped both sides of a Saturday doubleheader versus McNeese State at Joe Miller Ballpark. The Panthers faltered 3-1 in game one and fell 6-5 in walk-off fashion during game two.
How it Happened:
GAME 1 (McNeese won 3-1, F/7): A pitcher's duel for much of the way, PVAMU's lone run came via a third-inning RBI groundout from Zach Trevino that scored
Christian Mendez that tied it at 1-1. The Panthers had chances in the fourth and fifth innings but stranded three runners in scoring position. The Cowboys tacked on an unearned run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and added another in the sixth for insurance.
Tyler Laux was charged with the hard-luck loss, fanning three while scattering seven hits and allowing one earned run in 4.2 innings of work.
Alex Martinez was 2-for-3.
GAME 2 (McNeese won 6-5): Down 5-0 entering the seventh inning, the Panthers got on the board with a RBI double from
Andrew Garcia that scored
Xavier Jefferson. In the eighth, the Panthers got the bats going for a four-run rally as Martinez singled to bring home
Kellen Rogers, and Mendez followed with a two-run single. Garcia plated Martinez on a RBI groundout that also moved Mendez to third, but a fly-out ended the inning. After the Panthers stranded two in the ninth, McNeese won thanks to a RBI double from Clayton Rasbeary that scored Nate Fisbeck, who led off with a walk.
Roberto Maldonado impressed in his Panther pitching debut, as the southpaw struck out seven in 4.1 innings of work. Mendez and
Brayden Johnson each had two hits.
