Baseball eyes top spot in SWAC West, hosts UAPB

PRAIRIE VIEW – The Prairie View A&M baseball team (7-14, 7-6 SWAC) has set its sights on the top spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division and will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff this weekend in hopes of surging to the top of division standings.

Game 1: RHP Kyle Smith (2-2, 3.28 ERA, 38 K) 
Game 2: RHP Victor Mendoza (1-1, 1.63 ERA, 31 K) 
Game 3: RHP Tyler Laux (2-3, 22.2 IP, 17 K)

PVAMU News and Notes:
- Freshman Victor Mendoza has not allowed an earned run in his past two starts. He has surrendered just five earned runs in five appearances this season.

- Kyle Smith has established himself as one of the leading workhorses in the league, having gone 7.0 innings or more in five of his six starts this season.

- Xavier Jefferson has reached base safely in five of his past six games. 

- Brayden Johnson paces the offense with a .300 batting average to go with 18 hits, 11 RBI, eight runs scored and four extra-base hits.

- The Panthers are 6-3 in their last nine games versus UAPB. They're 3-3 versus the Golden Lions in the teams' last six meetings at Tankersley Field.

Scouting UAPB:
- Junior Kacy Higgins ranks ninth in the conference in hitting, batting .339 at the plate, followed by senior Nick Kreutzer who's tied for sixth in the conference home runs with five, and junior Karsten Vasquez who's tied for seventh in the conference in doubles with seven.
