Prairie View A&M falls to Loyola Marymount on buzzer-beater

LOS ANGELES, CA -- In a thrilling last-second showdown at Albert Gersten Pavilion, Los Angeles, Prairie View A&M suffered a heart-wrenching loss to the LMU (CA) Lions with a final score of 75-76 on Saturday evening. Both teams were evenly matched during the Regular Season non-conference basketball game, reaching a tied halftime score of 32-32.

Leading the charge for Prairie View were standout performers Nick Anderson, who scored 20 points, and Tanahj Pettway with 18 points. Anderson also contributed significantly on defense with four steals and two rebounds, while Pettway added five rebounds to his scoring efforts. Other notable contributions came from various Panthers; among them, John-Paul Ricks added five points and four rebounds and Marcel Bryant with eight points.

Prairie View A&M utilized great ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 16 assists on 25 made field goals. Pettway's five assists led the distribution list for the Panthers and Orlando Horton, Jr. also added four of his own.

The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 18 Loyola Marymount turnovers while committing 10. Those takeaways turned into 25 points on the other end of the floor. Bryant led the way individually for the Panthers with two steals.

A dramatic moment unfolded as Prairie View tied the game via two free throws with just 2 seconds on the clock. However, the celebration was cut short as LMU nabbed the win with a buzzer-beating layup, leaving the Panthers stunned.

Looking forward, the Panthers, now with a 1-9 record, face a tough challenge against UCLA at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles on December 17, 2024, at 8:30 p.m. CT. The team aims to rebound from this narrow defeat and improve its season record.
 

How It Happened

After falling behind 30-23, Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run with 2:24 left in the first half to tie the game at 30. The game stayed close for the remainder of the half, as the Panthers finished the period with the score tied at 32-32. Prairie View A&M took advantage of nine Loyola Marymount turnovers in the period and scored 13 points off those turnovers.

Loyola Marymount then snagged a 58-51 advantage before Prairie View A&M responded by going on an 8-0 run to seize a 59-58 lead with 8:07 to go in the contest. Loyola Marymount re-asserted control, outscoring the Panthers 18-16 the rest of the way to hand Prairie View A&M the 76-75 loss. Prairie View A&M took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 43 points in the lane.
