All Prairie View A&M starters reach base in 10-5 victory over Grambling to open the 2024 season

HOUSTON, Texas --Prairie View A&M received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Panthers put 10 runs on the board and defeat the Grambling Tigers 10-5 Friday.

Junior Michael Dews (1-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (1-0). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out five.

At the plate, the Panthers were paced by junior Garrison Weiss, who went 2-for-4 on the day with two doubles, a walk, and three RBI. Senior Marshal Jonas furnished a standout effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Sophomore Michael Burroughs also chipped in for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Prairie View A&M scored twice, with one run coming across on freshman Trenton Bush's single.

The Panthers then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the eighth inning after the Tigers cut it to 2-1. Prairie View A&M put up a three spot, highlighted by a run-scoring double off the bat of Weiss, which brought the Panthers lead to 5-1.

Grambling narrowed Prairie View A&M's lead to 5-2 before the Panthers stretched the advantage to 10-2 in the ninth inning. The Panthers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Weiss. Grambling put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Prairie View A&M still coasted to the 10-5 win.
