LAKE CHARLES, La. --Sophomore Michael Burroughs collected four hits, but the Prairie View A&M Panthers fell to the McNeese Cowboys 19-12 on Saturday.
Sophomore Tyson Carlton (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Prairie View A&M (6-4).
In addition to his four hits, Burroughs had a home run and five RBI to lead the Panthers. Freshman Michael Smith compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks and four RBI. Senior Marshal Jonas also contributed for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Jonas' RBI double was the key hit in Prairie View A&M's three-run inning.
The Cowboys then rallied to score four runs and take a 4-3 lead before the Panthers got back on the board in the fourth. The Prairie View A&M offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Burroughs, which brought the score to 7-4 in favor of the Panthers.
Prairie View A&M's lead had disappeared once the sixth inning came around and turned into a 13-7 McNeese advantage, when the Panthers cut that deficit to 13-8. The Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Burroughs.
The Cowboys expanded their lead to 14-8 before the Prairie View A&M offense got back in gear, biting into that lead in the seventh. A grand slam from Smith off senior Brock Barthelemy cashed in four runs in the frame for the Panthers, tightening the McNeese lead to 14-12. The Panthers were unable to get any closer, as McNeese added five runs to their tally on the way to a 19-12 final.
