, BATON ROUGE, La., --An explosive offensive output was not enough for Prairie View A&M on Friday. The Panthers plated five runs, but could not hold the Southern Jaguars at bay, and were bested 7-5.
Junior E. Breeden (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Prairie View A&M (13-16, 4-3 SWAC) and took the loss. Junior M. Dews was a bright spot for the Panthers, starting the ballgame and throwing 5.2 innings, giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Offensively, the Panthers were led by freshman G. Parker, who went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Junior L. Allen furnished a standout effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI. Sophomore M. Burroughs also chipped in for Prairie View A&M, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Prairie View A&M got an RBI single from Parker, scoring Allen from second base.
The Jaguars then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead before the Panthers got back on the board in the fourth. Prairie View A&M scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Allen, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Panthers.
Prairie View A&M kept Southern without a run before expanding their lead to 5-3 the following inning. The Panthers were unable to hold the lead, as Southern scored four times over the remaining four innings to grab the 7-5 win.
