11-strikeout performance from Dews powers Prairie View A&M over Southern 8-2

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --Junior Michael Dews had everything working on Saturday, striking out 11 Southern hitters over eight innings of work to help propel the Prairie View A&M Panthers over the Jaguars 8-2.

In addition to his 11 strikeouts, Dews (4-3) went eight innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits and walking none for Prairie View A&M (22-23, ). Junior Elijah Breeden also made an impact on the mound for the Panthers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout.

At the plate, the Panthers were led by junior Jadin Moreno, who went 3-for-4 on the day with two doubles, a triple, and three RBI. Freshman Michael Smith put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Freshman Jordan Williams also helped out for Prairie View A&M, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a home run and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Williams put Prairie View A&M on the board with a leadoff home run-off senior D. Lasseigne.

The Panthers then held the Jaguars scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Prairie View A&M scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Smith, scoring Moreno and sophomore Michael Burroughs, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Panthers.

Southern narrowed Prairie View A&M's lead to 4-1 before the Panthers stretched the advantage to 7-1 in the seventh inning. The Panthers scored three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-RBI double from Moreno.

The Jaguars fought back, closing the gap to 7-2 until Prairie View A&M added some insurance in the eighth. The Panthers scored a run on an RBI triple off the bat of Moreno, scoring junior Isaac Davila, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 8-2. The score remained 8-2 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.
