GAME 2 | Prairie View A&M 9, Southern 7
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --Freshman Trenton Bush collected four RBIs to help propel the Prairie View A&M Panthers past the Southern Jaguars 9-7 on Saturday.
Junior Matthew Krall (1-0) got the win for Prairie View A&M (23-23, ). The right-hander went 4.2 innings, giving up six runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out four. Senior Victor Mendoza also pitched well, going 3.1 innings, surrendering one run on four hits, walking none, and striking out three.
Bush went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk in addition to his four RBIs for the Panthers. Junior Garrison Weiss put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Jayden Williams also helped out for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Prairie View A&M got an RBI single from freshman Jordan Williams, scoring freshman Michael Smith from third base.
The Jaguars then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Panthers got back on the board in the third. Prairie View A&M plated two runs off of Southern pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Weiss, which brought the Panthers lead to 3-2.
Prairie View A&M's lead had evaporated by the time the fifth inning arrived and turned into a 6-3 Southern advantage when the Panthers re-took control at 8-6. The Panthers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a grand slam off the bat of Bush.
Prairie View A&M held the Jaguars without a run before their offense got back in action the next inning. The Panthers drove in a run on junior Jayden Williams' one-out RBI double, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 9-6. Southern put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Panthers still held on for the 9-7 win.
