Jonas racks up 4 hits in Prairie View A&M's 16-3 win against Grambling

GRAMBLING, La. --Senior Marshal Jonas collected four hits to help power the Prairie View A&M Panthers over the Grambling Tigers 16-3 on Sunday.

Sophomore Tyson Carlton (3-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (26-24, 15-9). The right-hander went 3.1 innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on two hits, allowing seven walks and striking out three. Senior Devin Aguado also made an impact on the mound for the Panthers, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing two hits.

In addition to his four hits, Jonas had a walk and an RBI to lead the Panthers. Junior Trenton Bush compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a walk and four RBI. Freshman Michael Smith also chipped in for Prairie View A&M, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Prairie View A&M's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of senior Derrek Lathon.

The Panthers then held the Tigers scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Prairie View A&M brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Bush's single, which brought the score to 7-0 in favor of the Panthers.

Grambling narrowed Prairie View A&M's lead to 7-1 before the Panthers stretched the advantage to 8-1 in the fourth inning. The Panthers recorded a run off of sophomore Michael Burroughs' two-out solo home run off junior Jeremiah Newman.

The Tigers gained ground, closing the gap to 8-3 until Prairie View A&M added some insurance in the fifth. The three-run frame for the Panthers was punctuated by a two-run single off the bat of junior Isaac Davila. bringing the score to 11-3 in favor of Prairie View A&M.

The Panthers held Grambling scoreless before building on their lead to 16-3 the following inning. The Prairie View A&M offense piled up five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Smith and a two-run triple from Bush. The score remained 16-3 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.
