Men's Basketball Faces Tough Loss to Alabama A&M

HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The Prairie View A&M men's basketball team fell to the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 98-82 on the road Monday inside the Event Center in Huntsville, Ala.

During the first half, the Panthers were trailing with a score of 30 against the Bulldogs' 40. Despite a concerted effort in the second half, the team couldn't bridge the gap. Bush led the scoring for Prairie View A&M with a remarkable 28 points, followed closely by Pettway, who contributed 22 points, seven rebounds, and two steals to the team's effort. Other players like Zaakir Sawyer, Jordan Tillmon, and Ryan Bolton Jr. also made notable contributions, demonstrating the team's depth and potential.

Led by Ryan Bolton Jr.'s three offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in nine second-chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 20 Alabama A&M turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Orlando Horton, Jr. led the way individually for the Panthers with two steals.

'The team showed spirit and drive but we need to focus on improving our defensive game,' reflected one of the Panthers' coaching staff after the game. With their current standing at 4-17 overall and 3-5 in the SWAC, the Panthers are looking forward to their next challenge against Texas Southern on February 1, 2025, at H&PE Arena in Houston, Texas. This upcoming game will be critical for Prairie View A&M as they aim to enhance their record and rebound from the recent setbacks.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 40-30 heading into halftime.

Alabama A&M kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 52-38 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 52-45 with 14:18 to go in the contest. Alabama A&M responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 98-82. Prairie View A&M took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 52 points in the lane.
