Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers Prepare for Volleyball Clash with Texas Southern

10/8/2025 8:34:00 PM

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX - The Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers are set to renew their rivalry with the Texas Southern Lady Tigers on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. inside the H&PE Arena in Houston. The matchup not only carries SWAC implications but also adds another chapter to one of the league's most competitive rivalries.

Under the direction of Head Coach Dottie Hampton, Prairie View A&M enters the contest with a 7-10 overall record and an unblemished 4-0 mark in SWAC play. The Lady Panthers are riding a five-match winning streak, looking to extend their dominance against a Texas Southern squad that matches their SWAC record but sits at 5-12 overall.

Leading the charge offensively is Kylee Owens, who has been a consistent spark for the Lady Panthers with 213 kills on the year, averaging 3.38 kills per set and 3.94 points per set. She's hitting .195 on 652 total attacks while adding 29 service aces and 248 total points.

Owens is supported by D'Mya Hill, who has registered 175 kills while averaging 2.87 kills per set and hitting .216 on 463 attacks. Iyonna Sherwood adds another strong offensive option with 119 kills, hitting an impressive .263 for the season.

On the defensive side, Adlene Jideofor anchors the front line with 49 total blocks (18 solo, 31 assisted), averaging 0.84 blocks per set. In the back row, Leila Smalls has been a steady presence with 205 digs—averaging 4.27 per set—and a .931 reception percentage, making her one of the most reliable defenders in the conference.

Running the offense are setters Tayler Ruffin and MaKinzie Taplin, who provide balance and rhythm to the Lady Panthers' attack. Ruffin leads the team with 293 assists (4.65 per set), while Taplin adds 260 assists (4.73 per set), combining for a dynamic setting duo that keeps Prairie View A&M's offense fluid and unpredictable.

Historically, Texas Southern holds a narrow 16-14 advantage in the series dating back to 2012. However, Prairie View A&M has claimed the last five meetings and looks to build on that momentum. A victory Thursday night would not only strengthen their standing atop the SWAC but also continue their push toward a dominant conference campaign.
