Softball Defeats UAPB in Game 2 & 3

GAME 1 | Prairie View A&M 13, UAPB 8

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas --The Prairie View A&M Panthers fought back from down 8-7 in the fifth inning to knock off the UAPB Lady Lions 13-8 Saturday.

Senior Cailin Massey (8-4) got the win for Prairie View A&M (19-17, 13-3). The right-hander went 1.2 innings, giving up six runs, three earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Senior Madalyne Martinez also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.

In the batter's box, the Panthers were led by junior Mia Nunez, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a walk and three RBI. Sophomore Reagan Green furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI. Freshman Kearstin Tinsley also chipped in for Prairie View A&M, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Prairie View A&M scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of sophomore Lainey Niederhofer.

The Panthers lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the third trailing 6-3. Prairie View A&M brought home a pair, with one run driven in by senior Janaiya Thomas' single, which tightened the Lady Lions lead to 6-5.

UAPB built their lead to 8-5 before the Prairie View A&M offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 8-7 in the fifth. The Panthers picked up two runs off of UAPB pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double from Green.

Prairie View A&M held the Lady Lions off the board before taking the lead in the sixth. The Panthers scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Nunez, bringing the score to 12-8 in favor of Prairie View A&M.

The Panthers kept UAPB off the scoreboard before building on their lead to 13-8 the following inning. Tinsley came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M and get them on the board. The score remained 13-8 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.

Senior Madalyne Martinez was dealing on Saturday, hurling a four-hit shutout to lead the Prairie View A&M Panthers over the UAPB Lady Lions 8-0.

Martinez (1-4) went the distance for Prairie View A&M (20-17, 14-3), giving up four hits, walking two and striking out three.

In the batter's box, the Panthers were paced by junior Mia Nunez, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a double, a walk and two RBI. Junior Dyani McKinley furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk. Freshman Hannah Comeaux also helped out for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. Prairie View A&M got an RBI single from Nunez, scoring freshman Kearstin Tinsley from second base.

The Panthers then tacked on runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, with their biggest output coming in the third when they scored three times.
