The Prairie View A&M Panthers men's track and field team had an eventful first day at the SWAC Outdoor Championships held at A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA. The Panthers faced stiff competition but showcased strong performances.
Thierry Garcon scored for the team by placing 6th in the 10000m race, clocking a time of 33:27.02. His performance added crucial points to the team's tally and was among the highlights for the Panthers on day one of the championships.
In field events,
Damion Phillips emerged as a standout athlete. Phillips clinched 2nd place in the javelin throw, achieving a personal record with a distance of 52.41 meters. He also displayed versatility by excelling in the decathlon, sitting in third place with 3222 points after the first day. His specific results in the decathlon were commendable; he placed 3rd in the 100m with a time of 11.51, 5th in the long jump at 6.25m, 3rd in the shot put recording 11.34m, secured 1st in the high jump with 1.83m, and finally, 5th in the 400m race in 54.67. Phillips is set to complete the decathlon on day 2 of the championships.
