PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --The Prairie View A&M Panthers took a 7-6 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hang on and fell 14-8 to the Alabama State Hornets Friday.
Sophomore Beau Beaty (0-2) came out of the bullpen for Prairie View A&M (17-36, 13-13) and took the loss. Senior Seve Medrano was a bright spot for the Panthers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Sophomore Ahmar Donatto put Prairie View A&M on the board with a leadoff home run off junior Esaid Pena.
The Hornets broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the third inning, when the Panthers got back on the scoreboard. Prairie View A&M put up two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of sophomore Landon Williams, which brought the score level at 3-3.
Alabama State broke that tie and grabbed a 5-3 lead moving into the fifth, when Prairie View A&M tied the game at five. The Panthers notched two runs when a single from senior Marshal Jonas brought home senior Jayden Williams and sophomore Landon Williams.
The Hornets broke the tie and grabbed the lead heading into the sixth inning, when Prairie View A&M got back on the board. The Panthers scored twice on sophomore Landon Williams' two-run homer, bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 7-6.
Alabama State then mounted a comeback, taking a 14-7 lead heading into the seventh, when the Panthers cut that deficit to 14-8. Prairie View A&M scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Lee Allen. The Panthers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
