GULFPORT, Miss. --Prairie View A&M received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Panthers put eight runs on the board and beat the Southern Jaguars 8-1 Wednesday night after the game had been rescheduled to 6 pm.
Senior Cailin Massey (10-5) got the win for Prairie View A&M (28-20). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out three.
Offensively, the Panthers were led by senior Aerin Talley, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Junior Mia Nunez furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Kayla Zaid also chipped in for Prairie View A&M, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the second inning. Prairie View A&M's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Zaid.
The Jaguars failed to push any runs across before the Panthers built on their lead in the fourth inning. Prairie View A&M plated two runs off of Southern pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Nunez, which brought the Panthers lead to 6-1.
Prairie View A&M held Southern without a run before expanding their lead to 8-1 the following inning. Prairie View A&M notched two runs, including one on a solo round-tripper off the bat of Talley. The score remained 8-1 for the rest of the game, as Prairie View A&M coasted to the win.
