HOUSTON, Texas – The Prairie View A&M University women's basketball team, led by new head coach Tai Dillard, made a strong impact off the court Saturday as they participated in Mayor John Whitmire's Back 2 School & Health Fair at the George R. Brown Convention Center.
The event, presented by Shell, welcomed thousands of local families in preparation for the new school year, offering free backpacks, school supplies, health screenings, and routine immunizations. Coach Dillard and members of the Lady Panthers helped distribute supplies and spent the day engaging with children and families throughout the center.
"This was a beautiful experience for our team," said Coach Dillard. "Serving the community is something we take pride in, and it's important for our student-athletes to understand the value of giving back. Today was about more than just school supplies—it was about connection and compassion."
The Lady Panthers were all smiles as they handed out essentials and supported attendees navigating the health services available onsite. The fair also included access to medical professionals, educational resources, and wellness information for families across the Houston area.
"It felt great to be out here making a difference," said junior forward Trinity Johnson. "We had fun, but most importantly, we were helping kids get ready for school and feel confident heading into the year."
With a new era underway under Coach Dillard's leadership, the Lady Panthers are embracing the opportunity to be active and visible leaders in the community.
"This is just the beginning," Dillard added. "We're building something special at Prairie View, and being present in moments like these is part of that foundation."
