Panthers come up short in a 38-17 loss to Rice

HOUSTON, Texas -- Prairie View A&M fell 38-17 to Rice on the road Saturday night.

The Owls improved to 2-1 on the season while the Panthers dropped to 1-2.

Tevin Carter paced the Panthers rushing attack by accumulating 65 yards and one touchdown over the course of the game, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Lamagea McDowell also added 14 yards on the ground, averaging 14 yards per carry.

Carter's most prolific target in the ballgame was Jyzaiah Rockwell, who caught six passes for 92 yards.

Jayven Jackson showed out for the Prairie View A&M defense, totaling six tackles, 2.0 TFL, and one sack. Team added and Tyler Nelson had in the loss.

The Prairie View A&M offense did a good job extending drives, converting on 46.7 percent of third-down attempts.

Defensively, Prairie View A&M held up fairly well against the Rice passing attack, holding the Owls to 114 yards through the air. In part because of that stellar defense, Prairie View A&M receivers out-gained their Rice counterparts 151-114.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M took a 7-0 lead over Rice after scoring the game's first points with 8:34 left in the first quarter.Rice then scored to take a 31-7 lead before the Panthers put a field goal on the board to cut into the lead and make it a 31-10 game.

After Rice scored to increase its lead to 38-10, Prairie View A&M responded with a touchdown with 1:41 left in the fourth quarter lead to cut the deficit to 38-17. Both teams played the rest of the game without scoring.
