Stout defense comes up short as Women's Basketball drops a 60–45 decision to Southern Jaguars

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --The Prairie View A&M women's basketball team kept Southern to just 16.7 percent from deep in a 2-for-12 shooting performance, but fell 60-45 to the Jaguars at home Saturday.

The Lady Panthers (2-22, 0-13) had three players score in double figures, led by Crystal Schultz, who had 12 points. Cj Wilson added 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks and Alana Shields chipped in as well with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Led by Laila Robinson's three offensive rebounds, Prairie View A&M did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in four second chance points.

The Prairie View A&M defense held Southern shooters to just 32.7 percent from the field, including 16.7 percent from three-point range. The Jaguars did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only five offensive rebounds and scored six second chance points while Prairie View A&M pulled down 29 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

Prairie View A&M started off strong, putting together a 14-10 lead heading into the second quarter. Prairie View A&M did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 14 points close to the basket.

The Lady Panthers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 26-22.

Prairie View A&M's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Panthers faced a 44-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M took advantage of seven Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.

Prairie View A&M could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 60-45. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its seven points in the paint.
