Prairie View A&M falls to Jackson State at home

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX --Cj Wilson and Crystal Schultz combined to score 36 total points - 61 percent of Prairie View A&M's points - but the Lady Panthers fell to the Jackson State Lady Tigers 63-59 at home Thursday.

The Lady Panthers (2-25, 0-16) had three players score in double figures, led by Wilson, who had 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Schultz tacked on 16 points and Alana Shields chipped in as well with 12 points and four assists.

The Prairie View A&M defense held Jackson State shooters to only 36.2 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 7-3, Prairie View A&M went on a 9-0 run with 6:00 left in the first quarter to take a 12-7 lead. The Lady Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-12 advantage. Prairie View A&M did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

Jackson State rallied to take an 18-16 lead before Prairie View A&M went on a 10-0 run starting at the 6:47 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Schultz, to take a 26-18 lead. The Lady Tigers then battled back to even it up at 28-28 heading into halftime. Prairie View A&M forced five Jackson State turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.

Jackson State proceeded to claw their way ahead after halftime, leaving Prairie View A&M trailing 44-41 as the game entered the fourth quarter. Prairie View A&M knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 13 total points.

Jackson State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 52-43 advantage before Prairie View A&M went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 52-49 with 6:19 to go in the contest. Jackson State responded and outscored the Lady Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 63-59. Prairie View A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
