PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The 2025 Prairie View A&M volleyball team ushered in a new era under first-year head coach Dottie Hampton, delivering one of the program's most successful campaigns in recent history. The Lady Panthers finished the season with an 18-12 overall record, captured the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season championship, earned the No. 1 overall seed in the SWAC Tournament, and saw several student-athletes recognized among the league's best.

From the opening serve of the season, Hampton's squad displayed resilience, balance, and a commitment to excellence that quickly established the Lady Panthers as one of the top teams in the conference. Prairie View A&M finished the year leading the SWAC standings and outperformed opponents in nearly every major statistical category, recording 1,360 kills, 1,265 assists, 177 service aces, and a .232 team hitting percentage while limiting opponents to a .183 attacking percentage.

The Panthers' offense featured one of the most dynamic attacks in the conference. Senior outside hitter Kylee Owens emerged as one of the SWAC's premier players, leading the team with 402 kills, 460.5 points, and 46 service aces. Owens averaged 4.22 points and 3.69 kills per set while earning All-SWAC First Team honors following a dominant season.

Supporting Owens was fellow outside hitter junior D'Mya Hill, who provided consistent offensive production with 333 kills and 361.0 points. Hill averaged 3.14 kills per set and became a key contributor throughout conference play, earning All-SWAC Second Team recognition.

In the middle, sophomore Iyonna Sherwood and junior Valencia Wilder formed one of the conference's most efficient front lines. Sherwood finished with 224 kills while hitting .309, and Wilder posted a team-best .378 attack percentage with 141 kills. Their ability to control the net and finish points played a major role in Prairie View's success.

The Panthers' offensive system flourished under the direction of setters senior MaKinzie Taplin and junior Tayler Ruffin. Taplin dished out a team-leading 513 assists while Ruffin added 529 assists, helping Prairie View average 11.61 assists per set. Their leadership and court awareness kept the Panthers' offense balanced and difficult to defend throughout the season.

Defensively, senior Leila Smalls anchored the back row with her steady play as libero. She consistently provided stability in serve receive and floor defense while earning All-SWAC Second Team honors. Adlene Jideofor added a strong presence at the net, contributing 86 kills and providing key defensive stops throughout the year.

The team's success was reflected in the conference's postseason awards. Hampton was named SWAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Lady Panthers to the regular-season title in her first year at the helm. Owens earned First Team All-SWAC recognition, while Hill, Sherwood, Taplin, and Smalls were all named to the All-SWAC Second Team.

Prairie View A&M entered the SWAC Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and opened postseason play against Florida A&M in the quarterfinals. The Lady Panthers captured the opening set and battled throughout the match before ultimately falling 3-1 (25-20, 27-29, 21-25, 21-25) to the Rattlers.

In her final collegiate match of the season, Owens delivered a standout performance with 23 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Hill added 11 kills, Smalls recorded a team-high 14 digs, Jideofor contributed five blocks, and Ruffin finished with 25 assists.

Although the season ended earlier than the Lady Panthers had hoped, Hampton's inaugural campaign laid a strong foundation for the future. The Lady Panthers established themselves as one of the SWAC's elite programs, captured a conference championship, earned multiple postseason honors, and created momentum that will carry into the next chapter of Prairie View A&M volleyball.

With a talented core returning and a championship culture taking shape under Hampton's leadership, the future remains bright for the Lady Panthers.
