GUTHRIE, Okla. - Prairie View A&M combined for 21 hits in two games on Wednesday but struggled to score runs as Langston claimed a non-conference doubleheader 3-2 and 4-3 at Guthrie High School.
Despite outhitting Langston, the Lady Panthers fell victim to three big plays as they dropped a 3-2 decision in the opener.
Langston jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to two home runs. After three scoreless innings, Prairie View finally woke up in the fourth as freshman Shontel Lopez hit a leadoff single followed by an RBI double from Jasmin Littles. Freshman first baseman Kiera Bridges singled following Littles' hit and was rewarded for her efforts after freshman Alisa Navarro knotted the contest at 2-all on an RBI single. In the bottom of the fourth, Langston scored the go-ahead run as Whitley Davis hit a shot to right for a 3-2 lead.
Down to their last bat in the seventh, the Lady Panthers tried to make things interesting as Druscilla Marmolejo hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Sarina Rios drew a full-count walk but the Lady Panthers couldn't convert as LU relief pitcher Andrea Barber retired the final two batters for the save.
PV sophomore pitcher Cally Falls (1-2) allowed four hits while striking out seven in the loss. Offensively, shortstop Leanna Flores led the team with two hits.
Game two went into extra innings as a fielding error allowed Langston to squeak out a 4-3 win in the finale.
Prairie View A&M struck first in the second as Flores hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on Navarro's single. Jasmin Littles drove in the game's first run as Flores crossed home for a 1-0 advantage. However, the lead was brief as Langston's Ashley Fabian hit a two-run shot over the left field wall for a 2-1 lead after three innings of play. In the fourth, the Lady Lions dialed up the long ball once again as Cameron Nicholson hit a solo shot to center for a 3-1 lead.
The Lady Panthers trimmed their deficit by one as sophomore Sarina Rios led off the fifth with a double to left field. Rios stole third and eventually crossed home on Marmolejo's RBI single to right field. In the sixth, the Lady Panthers tied the game at 3-all as an RBI by Littles scored Flores, who reached base on a single. One inning later, the Lady Panthers had a shot to break the tie but stranded two runners in scoring position which paved the way for extra frames as the Lady Panther defense held LU to a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.
After a scoreless top of the eighth by PV and with the international run rule in place (runner placed on second to begin the inning), Langston broke the tie and picked up the win as a fielding error allowed Andrea Barber to cross home for the game-winning run.
PV logged 12 hits as Flores finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Littles drove in two RBIs. Nicole Gallardo dropped to 1-2 on the season on the mound.
PV returns to action next week as they'll travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the 2012 SWAC Round-up.
