Prairie View A&M defeats UAPB 16-5 behind Dews'10-strikeout to win game one; Panthers take game two of three-game series

GAME ONE

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas --
Junior M. Dews was dominant on Saturday, striking out 10 UAPB hitters over 7.2 innings of work to help lead the Prairie View A&M Panthers over the Golden Lions 16-5.

In addition to his 10 strikeouts, Dews (2-1) tossed 7.2 innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on seven hits and walking one for Prairie View A&M (9-10, 1-0). Junior E. Breeden also made an impact on the mound for the Panthers, throwing 1.1 shutout innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Sophomore M. Burroughs led the way offensively for the Panthers, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with two doubles, two walks and five RBI. Junior G. Weiss provided a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk and two RBI. Senior M. Jonas also chipped in, going 1-for-4 for Prairie View A&M with a double, a walk and three RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Prairie View A&M scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Burroughs.

The score stayed at 2-2 until the very next inning, when the Panthers put runs on the scoreboard once again. Prairie View A&M picked up two runs when a single from senior D. Lathon scored junior L. Allen and freshman T. Bush, which brought the Panthers lead to 4-2.

UAPB clawed back to even the ballgame at four before Prairie View A&M reclaimed a 7-4 advantage in the sixth inning. The Panthers picked up three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-RBI double from Weiss.

Prairie View A&M held the Golden Lions without a run before expanding their lead in the eighth inning. The Panthers scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run double off the bat of Jonas, bringing the score to 12-4 in favor of Prairie View A&M.

UAPB got within 12-5 until the Panthers scored again in the ninth inning to stretch its lead to 16-5. The Prairie View A&M offense piled up four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Burroughs. The score remained 16-5 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.

GAME 2 | Prairie View A&M 8, UAPB 2
PINE BLUFF, Arkansas --Prairie View A&M received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Panthers put eight runs on the board and beat the UAPB Golden Lions 8-2 Saturday.

Junior M. Krall (2-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Prairie View A&M (10-10, 2-0). The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out six. Senior V. Mendoza also made an impact on the mound for the Panthers, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing two hits, with two walks and one strikeout.

Sophomore M. Burroughs led the way offensively for the Panthers, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a double, a home run, a walk and three RBI. Junior J. Moreno compiled a standout performance as well, going 1-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. Junior I. Davila also chipped in, going 3-for-4 for Prairie View A&M with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Panthers were trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Prairie View A&M scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run triple from Moreno.

The Golden Lions failed to push any runs across before the Panthers built on their lead in the sixth inning. Prairie View A&M picked up a run on Burroughs' leadoff home run off of freshman Jacob Ehling, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Panthers.

Prairie View A&M held UAPB scoreless before building their lead to 5-2 the following inning. The Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of freshman M. Smity.

Prairie View A&M held the Golden Lions scoreless before building on their lead in the ninth inning. The three-run frame for the Panthers was punctuated by a two-RBI double from Burroughs. bringing the Prairie View A&M advantage to 8-2. The score remained 8-2 for the rest of the game, as the Panthers coasted to the win.
