HOUSTON - The Prairie View A&M Panthers baseball team are gearing up for an exciting season opener on February 14, 2025, at the neutral venue of the Cactus Jack HBCU Classic, where they will face Alabama A&M Bulldogs, Texas Southern Tigers, and Southern Jaguars.
The Panthers, under the leadership of coach
Auntwan Riggins, are set to make a strong start in this high-profile event. This is the first game of the season for Prairie View A&M, starting from a record of 0-0.
In preparation for the upcoming series, key players from the Panthers have been lauded for their impressive performances.
Michael Burroughs, returning after leading last season with a stellar .356 batting average, has earned his spot on the SWAC preseason first team. His prowess at the outfield was evident with his 69 hits, including significant extra bases like 16 doubles and three triples. Joining him on the first team is second baseman
Lee Allen, who achieved a notable .418 on-base percentage from his last season's performance, contributing significantly to the team's dynamics.
Additionally,
Michael Smith, another outfielder, whose last season's on-base plus slugging percentage was an impressive 1.103, returns this season on the SWAC second team. The squad is further strengthened by
Marshal Jonas, who recorded a .335 batting average and is known for his consistency at first base. With 21 returners and 23 new faces, the Panthers are a vibrant blend of experience and fresh talent, ready to take on the field.
The Cactus Jack HBCU Classic not only marks the beginning of the Panthers' season but also showcases the growing appeal and competitive spirit of historically black colleges and universities in the sports landscape. Coach Riggins and his team are looking forward to demonstrating their skills and strategies against the formidable Bulldogs, Tigers, and Jaguars, each bringing their A-game to this thrilling opening event.
