PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas --The Prairie View A&M Panthers put together a furious comeback, scoring four runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell 8-7 to the Incarnate Word Cardinals Tuesday.
Sophomore Marcus McMillan (0-1) got the ball to start for Prairie View A&M (8-18) and took the loss. Senior Leonardo Bravo was a bright spot for the Panthers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing two shutout innings, allowing one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.
In the batter's box, the Panthers were led by junior Michael Burroughs, who went 1-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Senior Brayden Johnson compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Landon Williams also chipped in for Prairie View A&M, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two doubles, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Panthers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Senior Jayden Williams came across to score the lone run of the inning for Prairie View A&M and get them on the board.
After the Cardinals rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Panthers came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Prairie View A&M pushed across a run on sophomore Landon Williams' one-out RBI double, which brought the Panthers lead to 2-1.
Prairie View A&M's lead had disappeared once the fifth inning came around and turned into a 7-2 Incarnate Word advantage, when the Panthers cut that deficit to 7-3. The Panthers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Johnson.
The Cardinals expanded their lead to 8-3 before the Prairie View A&M offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the ninth. The Panthers scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Burroughs, bringing the score to 8-7 in favor of Incarnate Word. The Panthers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
