UT Rio Grande Valley mounted a six-play, 71-yard scoring drive, culminating in a seven-yard rushing touchdown from with 2:21 remaining in the ballgame, as Prairie View A&M lost 27-21 in heartbreaking fashion to the Vaqueros on Saturday night at Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field.
The Vaqueros improved to 2-0 on the season while the Panthers dropped to 1-1.
Chase Bingmon led all Panthers rushers with 88 yards in the contest, picking up 5.5 yards per carry. Tevin Carter also added 50 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.
Jyzaiah Rockwell reeled in seven catches for 98 yards.
Travor Randle led the Prairie View A&M defensive effort, collecting seven tackles, 1.5 TFL, and one sack. Team added and Carter had in the loss.
Defensively, Prairie View A&M held up fairly well against the UT Rio Grande Valley rushing attack, holding the Vaqueros to 145 yards on the ground. In part because of that stellar defense, Prairie View A&M runners out-gained their UT Rio Grande Valley counterparts 163-145.
How It Happened
Prairie View A&M responded to an early 17-0 UT Rio Grande Valley lead with a second quarter touchdown to narrow the deficit to 17-7.UT Rio Grande Valley increased its lead to 20-7, but the Panthers answered with a touchdown to cut into the lead to 20-14.
Prairie View A&M followed with a Carter three-yard touchdown run at the 13:00 mark in the fourth quarter and took a 21-20 lead in the process. Prairie View A&M didn't score again in the game and UT Rio Grande Valley tacked on seven more points to finish off the scoring.
