BEAUMONT, Texas – Nothing went right for the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Saturday night as Lamar jumped out to a 21-point halftime lead en route to a 31-0 shutout loss before a capacity crowd at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

The game started out promising for the Panthers as they drove all the way to the Lamar 28 before being stuffed in the backfield on a crucial 4th-and-1 situation. From that point, it was all Lamar as the Cardinals drove 71 yards on eight plays for the game's first score on a Kevin Johnson touchdown reception. The PAT was good as the Cardinals led 7-0 with 7:22 remaining.

PV's next drive stalled out at their own 37 and the defense appeared to record its first 3-and-out of the night until a roughing the kicker call kept Lamar's drive alive. The Panthers lost the momentum as LU completed three straight first down plays coupled with a PV personal foul to move into scoring position. Lamar moved ahead by two touchdowns several plays later as once again, Johnson caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Mossakowski en route to a 14-0 lead after the PAT.

A 17-yard punt by the Panthers allowed LU to move into scoring position once again as the Cardinals needed only 41 yards for its third score of the night following Johnson's 12-yard rush. As a result, Lamar closed out the half ahead 21-0.

The Panther defense held its ground in the third quarter as Lamar only scored a field goal to up its lead to 24-0. The Panther offense, which gained 510 yards last weekend, failed to get on track as they struggled to move the ball at critical times. Lamar added a late score in the fourth quarter for the game's final margin as Herschel Sims scored on a 4-yard scamper.

PV gained 249 total offensive yards to Lamar's 432 yards. The Panthers threw for 165 yards and rushed for 84 while Lamar rushed for 208 yards and passed for 224. Sophomore De'Auntre Smiley threw for 165 yards on 19-of-27 passing and was PV's leading rusher with 30 yards on seven carries. Spencer Nelson caught five receptions for 59 yards while junior linebacker Raheem Cardwell amassed 10 tackles.

The Panthers return to action next weekend in Huntsville, Ala. as they'll battle Alabama A&M at 6 p.m.
